Psychological Counseling
Psychological Counseling is Available
Certain individuals may benefit from psychological counselling to help them on their
weight loss journey.
Risk of Poor Psychological Preparation
Studies show that only 5–20% of individuals with obesity are able to lose just 5% of their body weight without external support—and even fewer are able to maintain that weight loss over five years (Anderson et al., 2001; Wing & Phelan, 2005).
These outcomes highlight just how complex and difficult sustained weight loss can be. As a result, many bariatric professionals now approach weight management with a more holistic, realistic, and supportive framework.
Why is Psychological Counselling Beneficial?
Rather than expecting patients to instantly develop strong dietary willpower, counselling helps explore the underlying psychological and behavioural factors contributing to overeating. This support can be especially valuable in creating long-term, sustainable habits following bariatric surgery (Fabricatore & Wadden, 2004; Sarwer et al., 2005).
Strong Psychological Foundation
Research, including findings from the Cochrane Collaboration, has shown that increasing the intensity and duration of psychological support significantly improves weight loss outcomes and helps maintain these results over time (Shaw et al., 2005).
When indicated, our psychological support services assist patients in identifying and addressing the underlying psychological and behavioural factors that contribute to obesity. By working through these issues, many patients are better equipped to make sustainable lifestyle changes and achieve greater success in losing and maintaining weight loss (Sarwer et al., 2005).
