Qualifications

Mr Niazi has been a qualified consultant general surgeon since 2006 when he was awarded his Board of General Surgery Certificate. 


With over 16 years of Surgical experience in General Surgery Dr Niazi has also Sub-specialised in Upper GI & Bariatric Surgery.

Mr Niazi’s areas of expertise considering his dual Fellowships include but are not limited to:

Training

Dr Niazi had his surgical training in one of the best academic educational centres of Tehran University of Medical Science. 

Dr Niazi started his practice in 2006 as a consultant General Surgeon & Upper GI/Bariatric Surgeon and a lecturer of Golestan University of Medical science in Gorgan while he was performing his major Bariatric operations at Laleh Hospital, Tehran. 

Fellowships

In recognition of his international standing and after being assessed by Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Dr Niazi was able to be registered as a surgical fellow in March 2013 without requiring any additional general surgery training. 

This recognition is very much the exception, as most of the International Medical Graduate (IMG) surgeons must take additional study before being accepted by RACS and the Australian Department of Health.

Dr Niazi has had two additional fellowship training in Australia since been first registered in 
  • Breast, Endocrine and Surgical Oncology (Skin Cancer) Fellowship at Tweed heads hospital & John Flynn Hospital in Gold Coast.                                                                                                         
  • Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship at St George Hospital, Sydney, The Centre of Excellence in Bariatric surgery

Research & Awards

Dr Niazi had always a special interest in advanced laparoscopic surgery, he played an Instrumental role in developing and introducing a new technique worldwide for Bariatric Surgery, this is called Laparoscopic Gastric Plication

Dr Niazi was one of the pioneers of this procedure in the country and been invited as a speaker on the first International summit of Gastric Plication held in Barcelona, Spain in 2011. 

He introduced this technique for the first time in Australia to the Bariatric surgeons at Royal Brisbane hospital in 2010 and supervised the first laparoscopic gastric plication surgery performed in Australia which then been awarded a travelling fellowship for, by the Royal Brisbane Hospital, Bariatric Department.

Dr Niazi’s paper in Laparoscopic Gastric Plication was the only paper which been cited in this topic at the10th edition of one of the most famous and popular textbooks of surgery in the world, Schwartz’s Principles of Surgery.

Teaching

Dr Niazi has always had a passion for teaching, and research; he has lectured in a number of medical universities including 
  • Currently Dr Niazi is appointed as both a consultant General surgeon and Bariatric surgeon in Eastern Health, Melbourne.
  • Bond University, 
  • Griffith University, 
  • University of NSW (UNSW), 
  • Monash University, 
  • Gorgan University of Medical science, and
  • Tehran University of Medical science.
Dr Niazi also is actively involved in mentoring, and is involved with:
  • Medical students of Monash University, 
  • Surgical trainees of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and
  • Bariatric Surgery fellows of Box Hill Hospital.
