How to Choose The Best Weight Loss Surgeon?
Do Your Own Research
Choosing to undergo bariatric surgery can be a positive life-changing decision. However, it is not one that should be made lightly, as weight loss surgery is a major operation.
We believe that long-term success is built on regular follow-up and a strong, ongoing relationship between the patient and the bariatric team.
Talk To Past Patients
At MBSA, we offer a private support group made up of hundreds of our previous bariatric patients.
This group provides a safe and welcoming space—through both group and private chats—where members can ask questions, share experiences, and support one another.
Patients are invited to join after their initial weight loss consultation, giving them the opportunity to benefit from real-world insights, encouragement, and guidance from those who have already been through the journey.
Many of our patients describe this group as incredibly supportive, motivating, and inspiring, often saying it gave them a clearer understanding of what to expect—even before their surgery begins.
Surgeon's Training
It’s essential to choose a surgeon with formal training in Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery, along with the experience to safely manage complex or unexpected situations during surgery.
At MBSA, our surgical team is experienced in performing a wide range of bariatric procedures—including Sleeve Gastrectomy, One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB), and Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB).
Because no single procedure is right for everyone, we take a personalised approach, offering the operation that best aligns with your health needs and long-term goals.
Our team is also experienced in performing revisional bariatric surgeries, providing expert care for patients who require additional procedures due to complications or inadequate weight loss from previous surgeries.

At MBSA, we believe that long-term success in bariatric surgery goes beyond the operating theatre. Our team is here to make sure you're well-supported every step of the way, especially if challenges arise.
What to Expect Before Surgery
All patients at MBSA will have at least two extended consultations with our bariatric surgeon, as well as face-to-face appointments with our in-house dietitian.
- First Appointment: A comprehensive educational consultation covering:
- The causes and physiology of obesity
- Indications for bariatric surgery
- The different surgical options available
- Risks, benefits, and expected outcomes
This session ensures you are fully informed and empowered to make the right decision for your health.
If you choose to proceed with surgery, you will then meet with our dietitian for:
- Education about the pre-operative diet
- Guidance on necessary vitamin and mineral supplements
Second Appointment (Pre-Surgery Review)
- An opportunity to ask any remaining questions
- A detailed discussion about potential complications and side effects
- On the same day, you will have a final session with the dietitian to review your early post-operative diet and ensure you're fully prepared.
Ongoing Support After Surgery
We offer a structured series of follow-up appointments post-surgery, typically scheduled at:
3 weeks, 3 months, 6–7 months, 1 year, and 2 years.
- Every follow-up visit with our bariatric surgeon is fully bulk billed.
- At each stage, you will also have the opportunity to book a face-to-face session with our dietitian, ensuring you receive consistent guidance on nutrition and lifestyle changes.
