How long will I have to be out of work after metabolic and bariatric surgery?
Most patients return in one to two weeks. You may need to have some half days due to low energy levels, or even work every second day your first week back, however Mr Niazi will give you clear instructions. Your workplace will probably want you back as soon as possible even if you can't do all the duties right away. Keep in mind your safety of yourself and others is the most important, and having low energy after surgery in some jobs can be dangerous .
Some patients worry about getting hernias at the spot of incision. This is almost never a problem from working or lifting too early after surgery, they are mose often the result of infection.
How long after surgery can I start excersising?
Straight away! You can take slow gentle short walks even while you are still at hospital, the important thing is to start slow however. Listen to your surgeon and your body. If you do high intensity sports or light heavy weights, start with "low impact" actions and movements first. Over the course of several weeks build slowly. As for swimming, your woulds need to be sealed before getting back in the water.
Is surgery a risk with type 2 diabetes?
It can be more risky, make sure when your surgeon gives you instructions about managing your diabetes around the time of the surgery you follow it. Keep in mind that with type 2 diabetes, following surgery people see a large improvement or even a complete remission of their diabetes. Other studies have reported bariatric procedures imroving type 1 diabetes aswell.
If I have heart disease can I still have laparoscopic surgery?
Yes, however you'd need your cardiologist to give you medical clearance. Bariatric surgery will improve most heart related problems such as:
- Lipid Problems
- High Blood Pressure
- Vascular (vein and artery) and coronary (heart artery disease)
- Heart enlargement (abnormal thickening or dialated heart)
Let your surgeon know of any heart conditions you have during the screening process. Patients with heart bypass surgery, previous stents, heart valve replacement or atrial fibrillation usually do very well. Special instructions will be given pre and post surgery if you are on blood thinners of any type.
After surgery when can I get pregnant? Is it okay?
Women are usually much more fertile after bariatric surgery, furthermore birth control pills do not work as well with heavy patients. They also do not work well when your weight is changing, thus if intercourse is needed having condoms and spermicide or an IUD is a must. Mentrual periods also can be irregular.
Most patients wait for at least 12-18 months after surgery to get pregnant.
Will I lose all my hair after bariatric surgery?
A little bit of hair loss is common during the 3 to 6 months following surgery. Why this happens is not totally understood. Even if you take all supplements recommended by your doctor, some hair loss will be notived until the hair folicles come back. However hair loss is almost always temporary. Intake of protein, vitamins and minerals will assist in ensuring regrowth of hair, and avoid thinning in the long term.
Do I have to take minerals/vitamins after surgery?
You will need to take multivitamins for the rest of your life, and you may need higher doses of certain vitamins or minerals, such as Calcium, Vitamin D, and Iron. At a minimum you should have yearly lab checkups.
Do I have to go on a diet before surgery?
You will most likely have to go on a pre-operative diet, 2-3 weeks prior to surgery. This is to help shrink your liver and reduce fat in your abdomen, helping the operation and making it safer.
